freeways.....lots of freeways
and of course, the famous Winchester Mystery House

Thanks for the fabulous photos! I miss CA so much! On the map: I was the 5th generation born on The ROSE Ranch,founded in 1867,on the hills formerly owned by the historic Spanish Mission San Jose;now Fremont. The copy of the deed handed down to me says, 79 acres was purchased by my 2nd Great Grandpa, Frank ROSA and it bears President Andrew Jackson's signature. My research tells me, Frank & his brother immigrated from The Azores; islands owned by Portugal. The cattle ranch grew to some 300 acres, managed by my grandmother, May TEETER Rose. She wanted all 6 grandchildren to build homes on it, but an ordinance from the city, forbid building in the hills. She fought that, with my Aunt Susie Rose Murphy, who had a heart attack & died, when the city wanted to annex some of her portion,for access to new tract homes, built right up to the original ranch house,on the flat land. In 1985, Gma passed on, and I inherited the family history & photos, of eternal value, from her. My cousin took care of Gpa in his old age and inherited the hills on the condition he would continue the ranch tradition. But, with the continued pressure of the city to sell, sky high taxes, an old family feud between our fathers, and a drug addiction to support, he sold out for 6 million dollars, took the money & fled to Alaska. The city of Fremont added the property to their park system. At least we can camp there, for Family Reunions and visit the gravesites of my ROSE ancestors at historic Mission San Jose.
ReplyDeleteMy maternal Grandmother, Mary Nunes also immigrated from The Azores when she was three. Her father,Joseph Rodrigues NUNES, owned a Cobler shop, which stood in the Historic District of Fremont,into my adulthood. She married John Taylor, during The Great Depression and they lived in the same house for over 50 yrs. He began as a Volunteer Fireman and later became the Fire Marshall of Fremont.
I still have many Catholic relatives in the area and other parts of California. I hope my handsome nephew, Tyler,can help me find and teach them. Thanks Elder McAllister!
